Baby, It’s HOT Outside

hot-outsideLet’s face it, it’s hot inside too! The best way to beat the heat with your children this summer is to surround yourself with water. If you do not have access to a pool, there are simple and inexpensive ways to create a fun water world right in your own backyard.

One of our favorite things to do is create a water river out of aluminum foil. You shape the foil to have “walls” so the water can flow. Get creative with your river shape and place your garden hose at one end of the river. We place a tarp at the other end of the river for a slip and slide.

Water gun tag is a blast! I have yet to meet anyone (adults included) who doesn’t love to play this game. Whoever is it gets the water gun and attempts to squirt another player, in turn making that person the tagger. If you have enough players you can turn it into a laser tag type game. Create two teams, everyone getting a squirt gun. Squirt your opposing teams’ players. When you are squirted you are out. The first team to tag out the entire opposing team wins.

Make fun shapes with flexible water sprinklers for the children to run through. Our current favorite was purchased at Target. Each package comes with four hoses (only $9.99) you attach to your garden hose. You can add more to make an even larger sprinkler/splash pad right in your own backyard!

Have a water balloon fight! Children love filling up their water balloons, drawing their battle lines and dodging their opponents throws. In Florida we are unable to enjoy snow ball fights; this is the next best thing!

Give your children a bath outdoors. Fill an inexpensive kid pool in your back yard and throw some bath toys in it. This is great for younger children, and if your older children want in, awesome! I don’t know about you, but I feel like I have to fight my children every night to get a bath. This is a great way to make bath time fun!

Also, make sure you stay hydrated! Heat stroke is very common amongst young children during these scorching summer months. Water is the best thing for your little ones as it contains no sugars or artificial ingredients. However, if you are unable to get them to drink plain water, make it fun by adding a fruit to the pitcher. You can use strawberries, grapes, peaches, blueberries, oranges, limes, lemons, etc. Try a few different ones and let them pick their favorite flavor. Add ice and let sit for at least 30 minutes to ensure the water is flavored and enjoy.

Have fun and stay cool this summer!———————————————————————————————————————————————————————
