The last of the kids head back to school this week and across the nation you can hear a collective “Awwwww, man!” coming from the kids as they lament the end of summer, and a collective “Awwwww, yeah!” coming from parents everywhere who are anxious to not have kids underfoot all day long. If you’re a stay-at-home parent your routine is about to change greatly with the start of another school year as you get the house to yourself for a while during the day so you can kick back and relax. Just kidding! But, with the kids in school, you might just accomplish 8,000 of the 2 million items on your daily to-do list.
Before you trade in your summer chaos for your normal school year routine, however, you should probably take just a little while to celebrate the start of the school year with your fellow stay-at-home parents. Gather your stay-at-home crew (and if you don’t have one, you’d better get one – hello? Support system?) and invite the other parents over for a celebratory new school year brunch. Everyone can bring a breakfast casserole or some yummy pastries, you can pour some fresh coffee and some orange juice and relax for a couple hours during a school day. (Those 4,000 things waiting to be done with just have to wait 2 hours.) Best of all, a school year kickoff brunch with area stay-at-home parents gives you a chance to touch base after summer, make sure you’re all in contact for emergencies, carpooling and any other ways you can help one another.
