Social Media Can Help Parents Stay Sane

downloadPretty much any parent who is home with the kids all day will tell you that one of the most difficult parts of their extremely difficult job is the feeling of isolation from all other things “grown up” that are going on out there in the real world while they’re in the house talking baby talk and being covered in pureed banana. If you’ve traded in your favorite news program for cartoons and your favorite music for nursery rhyme songs, you too may be in desperate need of contact with the outside world.

That exact reason may be why so many stay-at-home moms and dads enjoy social media sites. Parenthood can be insanely frustrating, but the isolation and feeling that you’re alone all day without contact with other adults makes it more frustrating. Being able to vent by taking a picture of the “art” your son just drew all over the bathroom wall or of the “gorgeous haircut” your daughter just gave herself and posting it online is such a great way to vent. When your Facebook or Twitter parent friends comment that they know exactly what you’re going through it really does help you get through those rough days. I’m certainly not suggesting you sit online all day and ignore your kiddos, but it takes two seconds to connect with folks online while the kids are eating, sleeping or watching TV. And the sanity that parent camaraderie can bring you can truly help you feel not so alone.
